Here are some television commercials I wrote—and one I co-directed—while employed at various agencies. You may have seen one or two if you watch any late-night cable TV, fantasize about Lara Croft or currently have acne. Otherwise, you can really only see them on this website. Or, occasionally, in AdWeek.
EA Games/The Sims 2
"Little People" This spot was shot by Swedish directors at Acne Films, on location in Barcelona, using Spanish actors who couldn't speak a lick of English. Still, you'd never know it from their performances. [AD: Kirsten Modestow]
EA Sports/Madden 2004
"Playmaker"/Ray Lewis Not thrilled with the creative direction the original concept was taking, the client asked us to revamp the campaign. After a re-write and re-edit, we succeeded in injecting this spot, and the entire campaign, with sufficient energy and Madden-'tude.
Teva Sport Sandals
"Retirement" The client told us he had no money, but then went looking for some after we pitched this idea. We cut corners everywhere we could and, unable to afford Pitka or Bay, the AD and I co-directed the spot. [AD: Geordie Stephens]
Burger King
"See America on a $1 a day" The West Coast BK franchisees were taking a beating from Taco Bell and Jack In The Box, so they asked OWN+P to help make the brand more relevant to the 18-34 market. Our campaign of low-budget spots polled better than anything BK had ever done to date, so they rolled it out into other markets—that is, until Crispin & Porter took over the national account. [AD: Geordie Stephens]
EA Sports/NASCAR 2004
"Ben Hur" Yes, that really is the actual Ben Hur movie footage. NOTE: The audio level is really low, so crank it up. [AD: Mark Bell]
