A Microsoft Office replacement for the Mac: OpenOffice 3

How to screw your satellite or cable company out of $10 a month.

As long-time readers know (are there any of those?), I hate paying AT&T any more than I absolutely have to. (Especially now that the company jacked up my DSL bill just "because it can...") Still, I wanted to get High-Definition programming somehow without paying them another $10/mo. for the privilege...

Milk does the Dairy Association good.

Evidently, milk doesn't do a body that good. According to a recent study, the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that "neither increased consumption of dairy products, specifically, nor total dietary calcium consumption has shown even a modestly consistent benefit for child or young adult bone health."

A pumpkin-free Halloween.

In Tampa, they've got this thing called Guavaween. It happens every Halloween and it's basically an excuse for about 200,000 deviant, twisted individuals to express their personal sexual preferences by dressing up and parading up and down 7th Avenue in Ybor City (the alternative area of Tampa). Everyone wore something black. But that's not very unusual for these people. They think they're from NYC. They're the kind of teens whose lives are perfect and parents are rich. So when they feel that rebellious teen angst, they reject their suburban existence by dying their blond hair black, dressing in all black and living on the seedy side of town and denouncing their parent's wealth. (At least until rent is due.)

NASCAR is stupid fun.

By asking nicely, we got into a sold-out NASCAR race at the new Homestead Racetrack (God had conveniently cleared the area with Hurricane Andrew three years ago). As you may know, this is not highbrow racing. This is Yee-Ha! racing. (Judging by the crowd, you'd be hard pressed to put together one entire set of teeth.) And as such, NASCAR isn't about skill, finesse or, for that matter, hygiene. It's about Budweiser and crashing. A lot.

Wow, and I kinda thought my paranoid concerns about America turning into a military/industrial complex (like the Empire in Star Wars) were unfounded. Sadly, I was wrong. According to CNN.com: The Army is considering a proposal to allow a private developer to build a military-themed park that would include Cobra Gunship rides and bars including a '1st Division Lounge.' Seriously, how else will The Army be able to breed a new generation of Storm Troopers? Unrelated fun: check out Chad Vader, Day Shift Manager.

If, for some unknown reason, you're still using M$Office, you need to stop right now. Because Open Office 3 (beta) is out!

Though it's been available for Windows and Linux for awhile, OpenOffice 3 is first version for Mac that runs natively (not in Java like NeoOffice). As you'd expect, it opens and saves all office file formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt, etc) and it's FREE! Go get it...

UPDATE: OpenOffice3 has some bugs still, so in the meantime, NeoOffice is your best bet. It's been around longer, and is more polished.
