Remember how VCRs bankrupted Hollywood? Me neither.

The movie studios are trying to revive the "Broadcast Flag" (which was unanimously struck down on May 6th by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals). The Broadcast Flag cripples any device capable of receiving over-the-air digital broadcasts. Worse, it gives Hollywood movie studios a permanent veto over how you use your television, computer or Tivo®, and forces tech companies to beg the FCC for permission before adding any new features.

In a nutshell, Hollywood wants the power to decide how another group can make their living. That would be like Christian fundamentalists telling Hollywood what kind of movies they could make—they'd fight that tooth and nail with a gaggle of free-speech lawyers (and they'd be right). Here, they're wrong. Only the U.S. government gets to have that kind of power. Help make sure it stays that way. Send your state rep a snippy email about it.
