An off-the-top-of-my-head review of Independence Day, the movie.
Saw ID4 and was impressed by the pretty pictures and big explosions. Did kinda miss having a storyline to tie it together though. The common computer language between aliens and mankind was indeed helpful. Also the fact that no one on the Mother ship questioned a lone fighter returning to base when it should have been invading the planet. And how come the virus affected the shields on the fighter ships? (I'll give them the Mother Ship and maybe it could affect the city-destroyer ships, but how come all of a sudden we could shoot down alien fighter ships with BULLETS!?) How come millions of alien fighter pilots missed three lousy jets flying into the chewy center of the city-killer ships? And, if they've been studying us for so long, how come they didn't know where our military bases were? What kind of invasion starts out by killing civilians in cities instead of blowing up the areas that would most likely shoot back? And how come the black stripper (thanks for the gratuitous T&A, btw) could hide in a maintenance closet and survive the blast? And how could Jeff Goldblum and a slow-driving old man make it from NYC to DC in a few hours when they should have been trapped in traffic just getting out of NYC. What happened to the alien fighter that crashed into the desert? (Oh, yeah, don't bother FLYING it to the base like you later demonstrated you could do, Fresh Prince. No, let's just leave it there and walk...) Nice to know alien space ships use the same controls that a jet does. How convenient. Okay, now I'm bored.
